Background
Athenahealth is a company that provides network-enabled services for healthcare and point-of-care mobile apps across the United States. It has a network of more than 160,000 providers and 110 million patients and offers a suite of services to manage medical records, revenue cycles, patient engagement, care coordination, and population health.
The Challenge
To celebrate its vast network of healthcare providers and patients receiving care, Athenahealth wanted to create an app which allowed users to generate custom avatars, or "Athenistas," and connect with others in a fun and engaging way.
The Solution
For this project, I was asked to design avatar components which recognized all genders, ethnicity, age, profession, and religion. These components ranged from facial features (eyes, noses, mouths) to hair and headwear, to clothing. All of these components had to be designed in a system that allowed them to be completely interchangeable, while also following the design guidelines of their award-winning "State of the Smart" marketing campaign.
In order to achieve the level of freedom we wanted the users to have when creating their Athenistas, over 200 individual components were designed and implemented.
